It’s easy to overlook the importance of the sheets you put on your mattress as a key to your overall sleep comfort. They seem like an afterthought once you have gone through the process of selecting just the right mattress. The friendly associates at Sleep USA are trained to give our customers the information they need to get their best night’s sleep…including selecting the right sheets!
Here are a few things you need to know:
- There are 2 basic types of sheets. Fitted sheets have sewn-in “pockets” with an elastic band that fit snug on the mattress corners. These are used to cover the mattress. Flat sheets have no sewn corners. While they can also be used to cover the mattress they usually are used as the top sheet.
- Sheet sizes are standardized to match the manufacturer specifications for mattress sizes. Sheets for twin, full, queen and king size mattresses are easily found wherever sheets are sold. Sizes for extra long twin and California king mattresses are also available but may be a little harder to find. If you need these call or go online in advance.
- There are a variety of fabrics used to make sheets. Cotton/polyester blends are most common but you can also find flannel, jersey knit, rayon, linen, bamboo and satin sheets. 100% cotton and cotton blends have the greatest breathability and provide comfort at a variety of temperatures. Flannel and jersey knits add to warmth and are best when it is cool. Satin is most expensive, cool to the touch and has low breathability that may cause perspiration. Bamboo can feel less smooth but is a good choice for “green” consumers.
- Thread count is an indication of quality and overall comfort. Percale refers to closely woven fabric and the thread count measures how many individual threads run in each direction of the weave per inch of fabric. 180 percale is standard for economy sheets with more luxurious versions up to 1000 percale.
